Portela Samba School- Making Its Mark In History

A long-time champion, the Portela samba school has an enviable record and is working hard to retrieve lost glory.

Located at Rua Clara Nunes 81 – Madureira , the Portela samba school is open on Wednesdays at 20:00 hours and on Fridays at 22:00 hours. This is one of the oldest samba schools, having been established in 1923, but has undergone several name changes in the past. As is customary, team Portela 2011 will also sport blue and white costumes, the traditional colors of the school. Prominently displayed as part of the ensemble of Portela 2011 will be the school’s symbol- the eagle which has survived many name changes.

The Portela samba school has to its credit the maximum number of championship wins by any school – twenty one in all. The championship was won in 1935, 1939, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1951, 1953, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1962, 1964, 1966, 1970, 1980 and 1984. In addition the school also won the runners-up position in the following years: 1937, 1949, 1950, 1956, 1971, 1974, 1977, 1982, 1983 and 1995 and the prize instituted by the O Globo newspaper 45 times. From all these achievements, it can be seen that the Portela samba school has been very successful over the years. It is anticipated that team Portela 2011 will regain some of the past glory for the school.

However, in the past few years, the school has not found it easy to get back to its old winning ways. It is barely managing to come within the first ten ranks which are necessary to keep it in the running for the top honors. Given the character of the school, it will surely not be for want of trying. Perhaps they will get that touch of good fortune which makes all the difference between victory and an average performance.

Will the Portela samba school manage to pull itself out of mediocrity in 2011?
