Beija-Flor Samba School- Paving The Path To Success
The highest ranked samba school of them all – the Beija-Flor samba school leaves the competition behind effortlessly.
Established in 1948 and located at Pracinha Wallace Paes Leme 1025 – Nilópolis, the Beija-Flor samba school holds its samba nights on Thursdays at 21:00 hours. It is currently the top ranked samba school among all the samba schools in Rio and it has managed to reach this position of pre-eminence because of attention to detail, extraordinary artistic ability and a real hunger to be the best.
The strategy of the Beija-Flor samba school to have a whole team of designers – at present the school has five of them while most of the others have only one – has paid off handsomely. There is little doubt thatteamBeija-Flor 2011 will also benefit hugely because of this. ‘Beija Flor’ literally translates to the ‘Humming Bird’, which is a popular and much loved bird in the Rio region. The Humming Bird is also the symbol of the school. The popular opinion is that the Beija-Flor samba school has been aptly named, because it manages to skim over the opposition, much like the Humming Bird skims through the air.
Overall the school has won the carnival parade a total of eleven times. This was in the years 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1983, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. In addition, it has been placed as runner up a further ten times in 1979, 1981, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. It is expected that team Beija-Flor 2011 will also put up an award winning performance.
Most of the victories of the school are credited to the genius of Joãosinho Trinta, the legendary carnival producer, who was with the school from 1976 to 1992. He became renowned because his productions, even if they did not win top honors, were so vivid that they left a long lasting effect on people’s minds. At the present time, the Commission of Carnaval of Beija-flor is made up of a team consisting of Laíla, Alexandre Louzada, Fran Sérgio and Ubiratan Silva. They are designing the presentation for Beija-Flor 2011.
Willthe Beija-Flor samba school be able to extend their good showing into the 2011 carnival as well?
